Berlin Internship Program
ABOUT OUR UNIVERSITY
Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private, non-profit research university located in Provo, Utah, USA. The university focuses primarily on undergraduate education, but also has 68 master’s and 25 doctoral degree programs. Full-time student enrollment averages 30,000.
BYU INTERNSHIPS ABROAD
In addition to their main area of specialization, more than 25 percent of BYU students possess excellent foreign language skills. Each year, thousands of these students pursue internships in their target language in over 75 countries around the world. Such experiences enhance their professional development and foreign language proficiency. As of today, this and similar BYU programs have operated successfully for over 10 years.
THE BERLIN PROGRAM
Three times a year, a new group of BYU students comes to Berlin to live, work, and study for 12 weeks. Over the course of the program, students carry out a professional internship in a Berlin-based company or organization. The working language for most internships is German. In addition to gaining valuable real-world experience, students also improve their language skills by completing an advanced-level German language course.
Our office in Berlin organizes, supports, and monitors the program.
STUDENTS’ LANGUAGE SKILLS
Most participants on the program have previously lived in a German-speaking country (18 months – 2 years) and bring a high level of motivation to their internship experience on top of valuable native English-language skills. German language skills usually are at the B2-C1 level.
STUDENTS’ EXPERTISE
BYU offers a variety of academic programs, including liberal arts, engineering, agriculture, management, physical and mathematical sciences, nursing, and law (see all BYU departments). Accordingly, students on the program seek internships that reflect a wide variety of specializations.
WHY ABROAD?
The best way to experience a culture is to live in it! By participating in the program, our students expand their understanding and appreciation of German culture. Participating also increases their marketability with future employers owing to the intangible life skills they acquire. The combination of language immersion and professional development in an international setting acts as a springboard for students as they graduate and pursue professional careers.
